Abused And Threatened by Fellow Scholars, 27-Year-Old Kashmiri Leaves Rajasthan

Pilani : Hashim Sofi, a 27-year-old said that he was threatened and subjected to racial slurs from fellow scholars in BITS Pilani. His mistake was being a Kashmiri?

He is a Kashmir research scholar at Birla Institute of Technology and Science, Pilani, Rajasthan, had returned home and now plans to leave the course just after three weeks of joining the institute.

The reason is quite heartbreaking, hard to imagine how he made this tough decision of calling his research off just within three weeks?

Here is what he posted on facebook, he wrote “As I woke up early morning last day, I couldn’t believe my eyes for what was written on the face of my door at Maliya Bhavan Hostel BITS Pilani. To add to the surprise, I later on found my clothes have also been pasted with some heartbreaking quotes. I wonder why such animosity for the Kashmiris,” Sofi wrote in a Facebook post.”

Hashim Sofi, hails from Bandipora district of Kashmir, told the hostel’s chief warden that his clothes scribbled with threats and abuses. Incidentally, it was the same day that Union home minister Rajnath Singh asked all the chief ministers to protect Kashmiris staying in their states from harassment.

“A group of people were standing outside his hostel my room. I had an argument with them and asked them why they were doing this rather than saying it to my face,” he  told The Telegraph.

His fellow scholars predefined him a terrorist because he was a Kashmiri origins. He posted this incident on his facebook profile along with t-shirts with hate messages.

He was allotted a room in the staff quarters and promised help after he complained to the chief warden. But his family was feeling unsecured about him and his safety.

“My career demands that I go back but my conscience does not allow me to…. I think I will not return to that place again,” he told the newspaper.

BITS Pilani administration has ordered a probe.

“The institute has taken serious note of the matter and has asked standing committee on student affairs to investigate the matter and submit a report swiftly,” media coordinator of the institute, Giridhar Kunkur said.

Sofi had joined as a Junior Research Fellow in pharmacy, science and engineering research board.
