Breaking : At least 45 dead after Patna-Indore Express derails near Kanpur

At least 45 people were killed when 14 coaches of the Indore-Patna Express train derailed near Pukhrayan area in Kanpur Dehat district.

The incident took place at around 3 am near Pukhrayan.

The S2 coach of the train was severely damaged. Four AC coaches have also been derailed.

Railways Ministry spokesperson Anil Saxena said several people have been rushed to nearby hospitals with injuries, and the casualties may go up. Accident relief train was rushed to the spot, he said.

After the accident, several trains scheduled to take the same route have now been diverted.

Northern Central Railways spokesperson Vijay Kumar said that doctors and senior railway officials are at the spot. Rescue and relief operations were being carried out by district administration and railway officials.

Though the cause of the derailment was not known immediately, sources said the nature and timing shows that the accident was caused by a rail fracture. However, the exact reason would be known only after an inquiry.

Home Minister Rajnath Singh speaks to Railway Minister Suresh Prabhu, directs DG, NDRF to reach to the spot.

“Deeply pained by loss of lives caused by derailment of Patna-Indore Express near Kanpur. My thoughts are with bereaved families,” said Home Minister Rajnath Singh.

“Strictest possible action will be taken against those who could be responsible for this,” said Railway Minister Suresh Prabhu.

Prime Minister Narendra Modi expressed grief over the incident.
