Chandigarh Stalking: Fake image being circulated to malign victim’s character

Chandigarh: Controversies started since Haryana BJP state chief’s son was arrested for stalking IAS officer’s daughter and later released on bail, Vikas Barala 23, son of Haryana BJP President Subhash Barala, has been accused of stalking and attempt to kidnap an IAS officer’s daughter in Chandigarh on Saturday.

There was an outrage after Haryana BJP Deputy President Ramveer Bhatti tried to justify the alleged stalking and attempt to kidnap with a controversial statement, he said “The girl should not have gone out at 12 in the night,” in a statement on CNN-News18. “Why was she driving so late in the night? The atmosphere is not right. We need to take care of ourselves.” He further added.

Character assassination of victim

Soon a photograph of the victim with two men went viral on social media after one Kuldeep Barala who’s said to be Vikas Barala brother posted it on facebook alleging the victim knew the duo accused.

And then a Supreme Court advocate shared it on Twitter calling her a “so-called victim”. Advocate Prashant P Umrao has claimed that the two men in the photograph are Vikas Barala and Ashish Kumar, the other accused in the case who was arrested and released on bail along with Vikas. Prashant P Umrao tweeted, “So called victim daughter of IAS from Chandigarh with Vikas Barala. This story is as true as like Jasleen Kaur of Delhi & of Rohtak Sisters.

Alt gathered plenty of such character assassination of victim by BJP and right wing supporters here.

However, the victim clarified that it was a “very old picture” and that the two men in it were her friends and not the accused. “The two men in the photograph are my friends,” she told “It is sad that they are being branded as perpetrators. Some people are spreading blatant lies.”

Irony of India team contacted victim’s sister and she too claimed the same.

She also reiterated that she had “never seen these guys before they pulled up” next to her in an SUV when she was driving to Panchkula from Chandigarh on Friday night.

Reaction against character assassination of victim

This is not the first time that people have attempted victim shaming. Earlier it was Gurmehar Kaur who was falsely accused with false and distorted facts.

Even BJP spokesperson Shaina NC’s twitter handle posted the same fake image, but later claimed her account was hacked.
