Samari Kasabi, 55, a Christian from the village of Dokawaya, in Chhattisgarh, was killed in a brutal attack which has forced other Christians to convert to Hinduism for fear of being murdered.
Mrs Kasabi was stripped naked, beaten to death and then burnt by her neighbours in a night of terror.
The mob was looking for her son Sukura, 35, and his family when they decided to kill Samari instead.
Christian charity Open Doors says the family had previously been abducted by Naxalites, an Indian Communist guerrilla group, for their faith. But the family were released after telling the militants they were praying for the sick and the needy in their village. Despite the militants telling Sukura’s fellow villagers that the family poses no threat, the family say they have been repeatedly hounded.
Other Christians in the village have given up their faith in a bid to escape the violence.
Open Doors sent volunteers to visit Sukura in the remote village.
He said: “Since the day I came to faith no Christian leader from any place has visited us. This is the first time someone has come and prayed for us. Thank you so much.”
The killing comes as religious extremists attacked a Protestant church in Jabat, in Madhya Pradesh.
Churchgoers were reportedly pelted with stones as they left a service.
There are an estimated 63million Christians in India with 80 per cent of the country’s 1.3billion population identifying as Hindu.
It is against the law to convert to Christianity in five states in India, with others expected to introduce the laws too.
The Indian government, led by Bharatiya Janata Party (BJP), a Hindu nationalist group, has been accused of turning a blind eye to attacks against religious minorities.
