Gujarat: BJP’s Youths worker arrested for abduction and murder of 8 years old girl


Ahmedabad: Nadiad Police on Friday arrested BJP youth worker Meet Patel (22) and two minors for the murder of their neighbour’s seven-year-old granddaughter Tanya Patel. Some chilling details have emerged in the case following interrogation of the accused.

Society members came out with candle lights to protest against the abduction and murder of Baby Tanya Patel, they are demanding capital punishment for all the accused.

Police said Tanya was killed within 45 minutes of being kidnapped and her body was dumped in river Mahi on Monday. The three kidnapped Tanya to collect ransom of Rs 25 lakh from her NRI parents based in United kingdom and planned to kill her after collecting money. However, as the news of her disappearance went viral on social media, the kidnappers panicked and killed her even before demanding ransom.


Tanya’s parents Amit Patel & Gayatri, residing in U.K. Couldn’t attent her last rites but watched the last rites performed online on Friday. Tanta Patel stayed with her grandmother Kusum Patel at Laksh Duplex, Santram, Nadiad. She was a class 2 student at SNV School, Nadiad.

SP Maninder Singh Pawar said, “We had begun the investigation right after Tanya went missing. We found Call Detail Record (CDR) of the accused and we traced the accused up to Anand. After the dead body was discovered we immediately detained the three accused.”

The accused and the victim were all neighbours in Nadiad’s Laksh Duplex Society. Police said Meet Patel had lured Tanya into the car, which he had borrowed from a friend, with chocolate while she was playing in the society around 7.45 pm on Monday. The two others climbed inside the car a little distance from the society. They travelled to Anand and bought ice cream for Tanya. Once she went to sleep, they strangled her. The accused then dumped the dead body in the Mahi River. When they returned, they found residents looking around for Tanya and even joined the search party for the next day.

On Monday evening, she was playing in the society when around 8 pm there was a power cut. When Tanya did not return home, Kusumben went looking for her. Unable to find her, she alerted the neighbours. When all efforts failed, they informed the police at 10 pm. Asearch was carried out in 5-km radius; however, it did not yield any result. The police then filed a missing person’s report.

On Tuesday, Police announced a reward of Rs 51,000 to any person who could provide information about the girl’s whereabouts. The investigation went up to Vadodara. More than 100 statements were recorded and CCTV footages on highways were checked. Early on Thursday morning, LCB officers received information about the body of a girl on the banks of river Mahi near Anand. On inspection, they found the body’s features matching the description of Tanya. Her relatives who were summoned confirmed the body’s identity after which it was sent for post mortem.


According to police sources, the three suspects live in the same society as Tanya. When news about her disappearance went viral, the kidnappers may have panicked and murdered her before disposing of the body in the river, they feel. SP Maninder Singh Pawar said, “We have detained three of the victim’s neighbours.

Meet, who is a youth worker of Nadiad BJP, has several cases of assaulting, prohibition and betting registered against him. The other two accused, who are minors, stay in a rented house and study in class 12. Meet had offered them money in exchange for their help. On Monday night the case was registered under section 363 (kidnapping) of IPC. On Friday sections 302 (murder), 364 (a) (kidnapping for ransom), 120 (b) (criminal conspiracy) and 201(causing disappearance of evidence of offence, or giving false information) of IPC were appended to the case.
