New Delhi : Students across India are changing their profile pictures on social media to protest against the violence which was initiated by ABVP at Delhi University’s Ramjas College few days back.
A student from Delhi’s Lady Shri Ram College started the campaign on Facebook, Twitter and Instagram, and called on others to join in.
Now, thousands of youths from varsities across the country, including Panjab and Mumbai, Rajasthan universities have responded to her initiative, dubbed #StudentsAgainstABVP.
Gurmehar Kaur, a student of Lady Shriram College, is not new to dissent or online activism. The daughter of a Kargil martyr became a well-known face after participating in advertising professional and activist Ram Subramanian’s #ProfileForPeace selfie campaign and viral video. Shocked by the news of violence coming out of Delhi’s Ramjas College, Gurmehar Kaur has initiated a profile picture campaign on Facebook, Twitter and Instagram, asking students across India to unite and condemn the violent methods employed by ABVP.
The online campaign is a response to ABVP’s recent violent rampage in Delhi. Members of the students’ body first vandalised Ramjas College over its decision to invite JNU student Umar Khalid for a seminar. The next day, ABVP activists attacked protesting students outside Ramjas College in which more than 20 students were injured, Delhi Police arrested Students from JNU and Rajmas college for protesting against ABVP Violence.
6 journalists were also thrashed by ABVP students, their instruments like Cameras, Mobiles and Mics were also allegedly broken by ABVP students, ABVP is a RSS students wing which follows Hindutva ideology and supports ‘Nationalist Manuscript’ written down by them.
