Watch : PM Modi’s wife slams Anandiben over martial status remark, says they got married in 1968

Ahmedabad: Prime Minister Narendra Modi’s wife Jashodaben on Wednesday expressed her shock over Madhya Pradesh Governor Anandiben Patel’s statement in a leading Gujarati daily that PM Modi was unmarried.

In the video, Jashodaben, who introduces herself as Jashodaben Narendrakumar Modi, is seen wearing a colourful saree and mangalsutra. “I am surprised over Anandiben telling the press that Narendra bhai was not married (to her). He has himself mentioned in his declaration while filing papers for Lok Sabha elections in 2004 that he is married and mentioned my name in it,” Jashodaben read out a statement in a video shot from her brother Ashok Modi’s mobile phone.

Jashodaben added: “It is very unbecoming of a well educated woman (Anandiben, former Chief Minister of Gujarat) to speak like this of a teacher (Jashodaben). Not only this, her conduct has tarnished the image of the Prime Minister of India. He is very respectable for me, he is Ram for me.”

In another short clip of 10 seconds that has emerged, Jashodaben is heard saying without mentioning the prime minister’s name, “I was his wife. I am and would remain his wife and it is correct that he is married.”

Jashodaben said she felt the need to shoot the video as she wanted people to know the truth. Jashodaben wondered how Anandiben Patel could make such a statement and said, “during Patel’s tenure as the chief minister, security was sent for me.”

“Truth will remain truth,” Jashodaben said. She states in the video that while filing nomination papers from Vadodara and Varanasi Lok Sabha constituencies, PM Modi had mentioned her as his wife. “I have the copies of the forms that were filled,” she says.

She also said they got married in 1968 and if Anandiben requires any proof, she can provide their wedding invitation card and wedding photographs to her.

Speaking to IANS from their hometown Uncha in North Gujarat, her brother Ashok Modi confirmed that it was indeed Jashodaben talking in the video.

“We didn’t believe this when Anandiben’s statement came on social media… But this appeared on the front page of leading paper Divya Bhaskar on June 19. Now this could not be wrong. This is why we decided to issue a rejoinder. We together recorded a written statement that Jashodaben read out from our home cell phone,” he added.
