Watch : Two artists lynched by mob over suspicion of ‘Child Abductors’ in Assam


Guwahati : In a bizarre and shocking incident, a frenzy mob in central Assam’s Karbi Anglong district lynched two young men over rumours of child abductors on Friday near Guwahati. The victims were identified as Niloptal Das and Abhijeet Nath who were artists based in Goa and were back home for the Bohag Bihu festival. Nilotpal, who worked as a sound engineer in Goa, is from Nabagraha area while mechanical engineer Abhijit hails from Six Mile area in Guwahati.

A video of the same has been circulated in social media wherein one of the victim Niloptal Das has been seen pleading to attackers by saying that, “Do not kill me…please do not beat me,” he says. “I am an Assamese. Believe me, I am speaking the truth. My father’s name is Gopal Chandra Das and mother’s name is Radhika Das…please let me go.” The mob though ignored his pleads and continued violence on him severely with bamboo sticks.

Those two men were visitng to waterfall at Kangthilangso in the district, where at village named Panjuri kachari they stopped to ask directions, meanwhile some of the villagers got suspicious and two of them reportedly told the others that these men were child abductors and asked them to attack their vehicle.

The Dokmoka police station officer-in charge JS Khowbun told to The Shillong Times that, “A village defence party told us there were more than 200 people, adding to it they told us almost 40 minutes after the incident. The site being a remote area, there was a problem with the telephone network as well and hence the delay. But by the time we reached the mob had fled the scene and the two were badly injured. They succumbed to their injuries on way to Dokmoka public health centre.”

With this incident, an investigation was ordered by the Chief Minister Sarbananda Sonowal. The Director General of Police Kuladhar Saikia told Times 8 that, “the police team from Guwahati led by Additional Director General of Police Mukesh Agarwal had been sent to Karbi Anglong.” Saikia added that “we have started our investigation and law will take its own course and there is no truth in the reports that police was present at the spot when the boys were being attacked by the mob.”

Police have arrested five youths who have been identified as Anuj Timung, Babu Rongpi, Sarukon Swargiary, Kangkan Basumatary & Dibjyoty Basumatary.
